A message from the WPN President - Winter 2011
As we all brace for the winter months and take to the indoors keep in mind that membership renewals are now open for 2011/2012, take a look at the Membership section of the website for more information. This years winner of the WPN Rising Star Scholarship for 2010/11 is Elanna Nolan from the University of Melbourne. Elanna’s essay, titled 'Going to town: Gender, Youth and the City' was a thought provoking and well researched piece that cleverly intertwined the issues of gender and youth into how we use our cities. I encourage you to read the essay, which will be published in full in our next edition of Vantage. Elanna is now pursuing further study, thanks to the generous scholarship, which has been provided with the assistance of Hansen Partnership for the past 5 years. We sincerely thank Roz Hansen and her colleagues at Hansen Partnership for their support of this scholarship. Watch out for notification of the opening of the award for 2011/12 – entries will be due at the end of the year, so students, keep your eyes on our website for more information!
Upcoming events for the network include:
- An urban design walk in June – Take a sneak peak behind closed doors at VicUrban and its sustainable refurbishment of a heritage listed building.
- Joint event with the PIA social planning chapter in July.
- Our AGM dinner in August – remember we are always looking for new, enthusiastic people to get involved in the WPN committee.
We are also currently looking into some exciting new projects – one of which is some new research which will assist in understanding how we can more effectively integrate gender issues into mainstream planning. Watch this space as more detail becomes available.
We look forward to seeing you at our events, and hope you continue to enjoy your involvement in the Network. We are always open to new ideas from our members, so please feel free to contact Micaela, our Executive Officer, if there is anything you would like to contribute. We love to hear from our members to ensure we are continuing to provide the best opportunities for networking and professional development.
